Goal-line technology needed as 'human error' costs O'Loughlin Gaels - Richie Power

The Kilkenny champions were denied what appeared to be a clear goal in the first half of the All-Ireland final.

FORMER KILKENNY HURLER Richie Power believes that goal-line technology is required after Oโ€™Loughlin Gaels were denied what appeared to be a legitimate goal in Sundayโ€™s All-Ireland final.

Replay footage shows that Owen Wallโ€™s first-half effort was carried over the line by St Thomasโ€™ full-back Fintan Burke, but the score was not awarded. Oโ€™Loughlin Gaels selector Nigel Skehan labelled the incident as a โ€œridiculous decisionโ€ during an interview with KCLR after a thrilling final where the Kilkenny champions were defeated by a point.

Power says that Oโ€™Loughlin Gaels were perhaps fortunate not to have suffered any red cards during the game which became hostile at times, and resulted in the dismissal of St Thomasโ€™ James Regan. But he also adds that the officiating mistake proved costly for Oโ€™Loughlin Gaels in the end.

โ€œWith all the technology thatโ€™s out there, how we havenโ€™t goal-line technology in relation to incidents like that?โ€ says Power who is the subject of the first episode in the new seasons of TG4โ€ฒs Laochra Gael.

โ€œHawkeye can figure out points. How they canโ€™t come up with something in relation to goals? People will talk about the positioning of the umpires. Ok, they probably werenโ€™t in the best positions to make the call but itโ€™s human error at the end of the day.

โ€œItโ€™s human error. You can blame referees, umpires but at the end of the day, if you have goal-line technology there, itโ€™s a very easy decision then. The referee gets something on his watch or something in his ear to say it was a goal. It takes the decision out of the umpire and the refereeโ€™s in live play.โ€

Power, who was forced to retire from the Kilkenny hurlers in 2016 due to knee injuries, was reported to be in line for the position as manager of Ballyhale Shamrocks at the end of last year.

The Carrickshock man says he withdrew his name from consideration as he felt it wasnโ€™t the right position for him, and will be working with the Shelmaliers club in Wexford for 2024 instead.

โ€œI just kind of got the feeling that the players maybe wanted a different direction, they wanted some of the previous management involved.

โ€œPersonally I kind of wanted to bring in my own management and just freshen things up completely. I kind of got that feeling from it. If the players arenโ€™t going to be entirely happy, at the end of the day they are the most important people in a setup and for that reason I pulled my name from the running on the Tuesday night before the committee met.

โ€œIt would have been a huge opportunity, a huge club with great success. And Iโ€™ve nothing but admiration for Ballyhale Shamrocks. Look, maybe the opportunity will arise down the line but who knows.โ€

The new Laochra Gael season begins this week with an episode about Richie Power on Thursday night at 9.3opm on TG4

It balanced itself out in the end, Thomasโ€™s should never have got a red card, Gaels can have no complaints when they didnโ€™t take advantage of that terrible decision.

@anthony davoren: totally agree, surprised with Richie Power, they were beaten by 14 men!!!
It did not loose them the game
OLGs didnt have the forwards to win it, sour grapes, they should suck it up, move on, accept the better team won it

If they couldnโ€™t be sure it was over the line they couldnโ€™t give it. Simple as that. It looked over to me at first but we all needed slo-mo replays to be sure. The umpires were right in this instance, but it only serves to underline the case for goal line technology. These new smart sliothars will hopefully address the problem

A Kilkenny man saying a couple of O Loughlins could have got red really means they definitely should have and saying the Thomasโ€™s player was unfortunate actually means he shouldnโ€™t have seen red, not able to use an extra man for a huge percentage of the match is probably a more viable angle to review
